Blu-ray Ripper Tools

June 1 is going to be a big day for all you Blu-ray junkies out there because that is when a truckload, nay, a boatload of movies hits the shelves. Time to get that paper route. ‘Alice,’ ‘Wolfman,’ ‘Bad Boys’ and Clint flicks will come.

The 800-pound gorilla is Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” the movie that is approaching $800 million in worldwide grosses (no wonder Disney is hitting its vault to find classic animated movies such as “Sleeping Beauty” and “Cinderella” to turn into live-action spectacles).
The Blu-ray will come with a slew of extras, including a time-lapse piece showing Helena Bonham Carter’s three-hour makeup job and a look at the visual effects process of growing and shrinking Alice.

“The Wolfman” also growls its way to stores. The unrated theatrical cut gives the movie some bite, but the neat thing here is not the two alternate endings, which just show the filmmakers had no idea where to take the story, but the fact you can stream and watch the 1941 version of “The Wolfman” via BD-Live or using your computer or smartphone up until Dec. 1, 2010.

The early entry into the Michael Bay oeuvre “Bad Boys” careens onto Blu-ray on June 1 for the first time. It’s got the same extras as the DVD special edition, but you do get the fancy schmancy “movieIQ” that gives you the option of getting continually updated trivia information tied to scenes of the movie.

Now here’s the biggie: the all-you-can-watch Clint Eastwood buffet.Warner Home Video is releasing five Eastwood collections:

– “Clint Eastwood Collection,” a 10-movie Blu-ray box set, with four making their ‘ray debut (“The Rookie,” “Kelly’s Heroes,” “Where Eagles Dare” and “Absolute Power”);

– “Essential Eastwood: Director’s Collection” (Eastwood’s recent awards plays such as “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Mystic River” and “Million Dollar Baby” but also includes “Unforgiven”);

– “Essential Eastwod: Action Collection,” “Eastwood Blu-ray Promotion” (double features such as “Kelly’s Heroes”/”Where Eagles Dare” and several Dirty Harry flicks) and “Clint Eastwood: 35 Films 35 Years at Warner Bros.” (The latter is a massive 19-disc collection that was previously released on DVD.)

Extras are minimal, but all this is timed to the release of “The Eastwood Factor Extended Edition,” which is a feature-length documentary on the filmmaker. (And yes, I’m sure Father’s Day is also involved in the timing of all this, too.)
